A welded tee consists of a main pipe section plus a small branch pipe. Obviously, the two larger ends serve as the main pipe, while the smaller branch extending from the middle is the branch pipe. In pure oxygen pipelines, the system is usually pressurized, which increases the activity of oxygen. If welded tees are used, when impurities inside the pipe move with the oxygen flow, changes in pipe diameter will lead to variations in flow velocity. This may cause impurities to collide with the pipe and generate ignition sources, or produce electrostatic discharge due to flow velocity changes, both of which may trigger fires in pure oxygen pipelines.

They are classified into two types according to production processes: one is seamless cold-drawn tees, and the other is welded tees with seams.
