American standard flange connection involves fixing two pipes, fittings or equipment onto respective flanges first, placing a gasket between the two flanges, and then fastening them together with bolts to complete the connection. Some pipes and equipment come with integrated flanges, which also fall under flange connections.

American standard flanges are classified into threaded (screwed) flanges and welded flanges. Screwed flanges are used for low-pressure and small-diameter applications, while welded flanges are adopted for both high-pressure and low-pressure large-diameter scenarios. Flanges under different pressures vary in plate thickness, as well as the diameter and quantity of connecting bolts.

Currently, China ranks first in Asia in terms of flat welding flange output, with an annual output of 2.25 million tons in 2000 and 2.46 million tons in 2001; its growth rate has slowed down in recent years.
